Question

Can firefighters wear a silicone wedding band in lieu of their gold/metal wedding ring while engaging in structural firefighting?

Answer

Based on the physical characteristics of silicone rubber, which addresses the risks of protrusion and heat, the request to allow firefighters to wear one (1) medical-grade silicone band during structural firefighting is permitted under certain conditions.

To ensure dexterity is not impacted or compromised, the Fire Department/Fire Chief shall ensure that firefighters involved in structural firefighting, and wanting to wear a medical-grade silicone band, adhere to the following:

  • No more than one silicone band can be worn at one time.
  • Silicone band shall be made of electrically non-conductive material.
  • Silicone band shall be of low profile and unobtrusive.
  • The Fire Department/Fire Chief shall seek an attestation from the medical-grade silicone band manufacturer to ensure it is safe for its intended end use. Employer shall keep a copy of the attestation at the place of employment and shall make it available to an officer on request.
