Policy 25-001 Medical Aid Principles

Rates/Fees

  1. WorkSafeNB pays medical aid providers established rates for services provided. These rates may be either negotiated between WorkSafeNB and the association authorized for contracting on behalf of its members or set by a fee schedule of that association.
  1. For the purposes of this fee schedule, medical aid providers include, but are not limited to:
    • Medical practitioners and specialists;
    • Nurse practitioners;
    • Chiropractors;
    • Physiotherapists;
    • Dentists and denturists; and
    • Hospitals and Community Health Centres.
  1.  WorkSafeNB pays fees as billed for treatment and services by other types of medical aid providers not listed above.
  1. When WorkSafeNB makes special arrangements to procure medical aid services, WorkSafeNB pays fees according to the rate negotiated.

 Medical Practitioner and Specialists

  1. WorkSafeNB pays for treatment and services provided by medical practitioners and specialists at a negotiated rate from time to time between WorkSafeNB and the recognized service provider. For current rates, contact the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.

Nurse Practitioners

  1. As WorkSafeNB does not have a billing/rate agreement with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick for service delivery by nurse practitioners, the rate for services and treatments, if billed, should not exceed the agreed rate for the same service provided by a physician under WorkSafeNB’s agreement with the New Brunswick Medical Society.

Copies of Medical Files

  1. The Workers’ Compensation Act requires physicians to provide reports to WorkSafeNB when requested. For reports not included in the New Brunswick Medical Society agreement, WorkSafeNB will reimburse medical practitioners and specialists $40.60, plus $1.00 per page.

Chiropractors

  1. Rates for treatment and services provided by chiropractors are paid at the rate negotiated between the New Brunswick Chiropractors’ Association and WorkSafeNB. For current rates, contact the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.

Physiotherapists

  1. WorkSafeNB pays for treatment and services by public physiotherapy providers, such as those from within a hospital, at the billed rate.
  1. Treatment and services provided by WorkSafeNB-approved private physiotherapy providers are paid at the rate negotiated between the New Brunswick Private Practitioners of Physiotherapy and WorkSafeNB. For current rates, contact the Health Services department.
  1. The rate represents the full charge for physiotherapy services provided to injured workers, including:
    • The initial assessment;
    • Any treatment provided;
    • Reports;
    • Telephone consultation; and
    • Common supplies for home use.
  1. Any additional equipment or supplies must be pre-authorized by WorkSafeNB. Rates do not include prescription drugs, which are billed as per other prescriptions.
  1. Physiotherapists may charge WorkSafeNB for only one visit per claim per day, regardless of duration of the treatment, or number of body parts treated.

Dental Treatment and Services

  1. WorkSafeNB pays for treatment and services provided by dental practitioners in accordance with the Fee Guide for Dental Treatment Services of the New Brunswick Dental Society.
  1. WorkSafeNB pays for services by denturists in accordance with the Suggested Fees and Services Guide of the New Brunswick Denturists Society.

Medical aid treatment and services provided out-of-province or out-of-country by a medical aid provider, are paid at the billed rate.
