As a parent, you play an important role in helping young workers understand their rights, responsibilities and how to stay safe at work. Young workers have the same workplace health and safety protections as other workers, and employers have a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace.
Students participating in co-op placements, work experience programs and apprenticeships are protected under New Brunswick's Workers' Compensation Act. While coverage can vary depending on the circumstances, learners who are exposed to workplace hazards through approved educational or training programs may be eligible for support if they are injured at work. This can include medical aid and rehabilitation services and, in some cases, loss-of-earnings benefits.
By understanding their rights and protections before they start work, you can help your child build the confidence and knowledge they need to stay safe on the job.

Safety Starts at Home
WorkSafeNB is proud to support Safety Starts at Home, a national campaign led by CCOHS. The campaign encourages parents, employers and young workers to have meaningful conversations about workplace safety before a young person starts their first job. By starting these conversations early, families can help young workers recognize hazards, understand their rights and develop safe work habits that last a lifetime.
