SAINT JOHN – The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC), in partnership with the Department of Education, today announced the winners of its first workplace safety student video contest.
The contest’s objective is to promote students’ understanding of their workplace rights and responsibilities to prevent injuries or fatalities on the job. The theme of this year’s contest is Protecting the New Worker: Workplace Safety.
“This video contest is part of our ongoing efforts to provide health and safety education to future young workers,” said Silvy Moleman, Youth Programs co-ordinator with the WHSCC. “We were amazed by the quality of the entries and believe the messages produced about workplace safety will resonate with young people.”
The winners are:
1st – North & South Esk Regional High School; Sunny Corner (School District 16)
2nd – Sir James Dunn Academy; St. Andrews (School District 10)
3rd – Hartland High School; Hartland (School District 14)
High school classes from around the province submitted 29 entries. The videos could be a maximum of 10 minutes and could be produced in any style, including documentary, TV commercial, music video, news report or animation.
The top three submissions receive $1000, $750 and $500 respectively to be used to buy school resources.
“We are proud of the work done by the students and their schools, Education Minister Madeleine Dubé said. “This video contest provided a unique opportunity for creative, enthusiastic students to express their vision and ideas.”
A panel of judges reviewed the submissions and selected the winners. Videos were judged on their artistry, creativity, originality and their ability to communicate a clear and positive message about youth workplace safety.
Annually, approximately 2,000 New Brunswick young workers report a workplace accident, and since 1999, 11 have died from workplace injuries.
