News Release WorkSafeNB Recognizes companies at annual health and safety conference

October 23, 2007

Saint John: The WHSCC acknowledged the exemplary efforts in health and safety of two New Brunswick companies at their annual Health and Safety Conference in Saint John recently. Four-Best Management, of St-Joseph-de-Madawaska, and Les Tourbières Berger, of Pointe Sapin, were recognized at the Company Recognition Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, October 16.

“We are very proud of the commitment both these companies have shown toward developing, promoting and maintaining a robust health and safety culture at their workplaces,” said David Greason, vice-president of the WHSCC’s WorkSafe Services Division. “They’ve gone above and beyond their legislated duty to health and safety, and, in doing so, they’ve not only reduced the costs associated with injuries and improved their bottom line, but they’ve established a positive working environment and greatly reduced staff turnaround.”

Four-Best Management Inc., is a forestry consulting, contracting and training firm established in 2001. “Although they are a relatively young company, we are acknowledging Four-Best Management because they provide an ideal example of a company that’s put safety first right from the start,” Greason said. “This is a company that, to date, has recorded only four lost-time claims. This is all the more impressive given the industry they operate within – an industry that faces daily job hazards such as falling trees, wild animals (particularly bears), unpredictable weather conditions, rugged terrain and isolated locations, not to mention some of the dangerous tools and equipment they work with,” he said.

Les Tourbières Berger Ltée is an industry leader in the harvesting and production of peat moss, and is highly regarded for its innovative research, market development and quality control. Headquartered in Quebec, the company operates a sphagnum bog in Baie Ste. Anne, employing up to 130 people. The company was recognized for reducing claims by 93% in five years, after becoming a pilot company for the WHSCC’s 5*22 program.

”Our population is aging, and we need to rely on a workforce that stays active and healthy, working over a longer life. Now, more than ever, companies need to focus on keeping their workforce happy and healthy, and that means keeping them safe. I urge you to learn from the examples set by these companies and emulate them,” Greason said.
