News Release Three-month deferral of premiums comes to an end

June 8, 2020

In March, to do our part to help New Brunswick businesses and provide financial relief during these unprecedented times, WorkSafeNB deferred assessment premiums without interest charges for three months, from March to May 2020. Monthly premium payments will resume late June.  WorkSafeNB will collect deferred premiums owed in three equal amounts in June, July and August. Employers who pay premiums annually, and still have a balance owing, must also resume payment at this time.

Questions and Answers

WorkSafeNB will resume collection of monthly payments in late June. As always, the monthly payment in June is based on payroll for May.  In addition to the regular monthly amount owed, WorkSafeNB will collect deferred premiums in three equal amounts, without interest, in June, July and August.

The deferred premiums owed for payment typically collected in March, April and May are calculated the same way as all other monthly payments. It is based on an employer’s individual assessment rate and their monthly payroll of the previous month. For example, if your payroll dropped in March 2020 due to COVID-19 compared to your February 2020, your April payment would be less than your March payment.

Payment for the deferred months will be collected in three equal amounts in June, July and August by direct withdrawal from the employer’s account. The payment will be in addition to the monthly payment owed for that month.

Employers who pay premiums annually, and still have a balance owing, must also resume payment at this time.

Annually assessed employers provide an estimate of their yearly payroll to WorkSafeNB. From this estimate, WorkSafeNB calculates the amount of assessment the employer must pay.

If unexpected changes in activity occur, such as your payroll dropped unexpectedly due to COVID-19, you may submit a revised payroll estimate during the year and WorkSafeNB can adjust your account. To learn more, please contact Assessment Services at 1-800 999-9775 (option 4).
