June 30, 2025

WorkSafeNB has released its 2024 Annual Report, revealing a landmark year in workplace health and safety that has set a new national benchmark. From achieving the lowest injury frequency rate in Canada to delivering performance refunds for the first time ever to employers and benefit improvements for injured workers, the report highlights New Brunswick’s growing reputation as the safest place to work and do business in the country.

“2024 was a defining year for WorkSafeNB and for workplace safety in New Brunswick,” said Tim Petersen, president and CEO of WorkSafeNB. “Our progress shows what can be accomplished when workers, employers, and our dedicated staff commit to a culture of care, prevention, and performance. The results speak volumes: fewer injuries, faster returns to work, better services, and stronger financial sustainability,” Petersen said

Key achievements highlighted in the 2024 Annual Report include:

  • Lowest injury frequency rate in Canada – New Brunswick is now the safest province in the country to work, marking a historic first.
  • Lowest average assessment rate in Atlantic Canada, and second lowest in Canada, reducing from $1.18 in 2024 to $1.10 in 2025.
  • First-ever performance refund issued, with over $180 million returned to eligible employers, made possible by a strong funded position of 152.9%.
  • Increased wage-loss benefits for injured workers—from 85% to 90% of net earnings—and enhancements to the Maximum Annual Earnings cap, rising from $76,900 to $82,100.
  • Major modernization progress, improving service delivery through new core systems and streamlined processes.
  • Record-high employee engagement, reaching 69%, with culture scores rising to 91%—well above industry benchmarks.
  • Increase in Client Satisfaction with injured workers by 3%.
  • Enhanced collaboration with key stakeholder groups, including New Brunswick’s fishing and firefighting communities.

“These results affirm our belief that when we focus on doing the right things—investing in prevention, supporting workers, and empowering employers—performance truly pays,” said Mel Norton, chairperson of WorkSafeNB’s board of directors. “Thanks to the leadership of our CEO and the incredible efforts of our staff and partners, New Brunswick is not just safer than ever before—it’s also leading the country in building a culture of care.”

As WorkSafeNB continues its modernization journey, the 2024 Annual Report reflects an organization ready to meet the evolving needs of its stakeholders—building a province where every worker feels supported, every employer is engaged, and every workplace prioritizes safety above all.
