News Release National Day of Mourning – Honouring Workers and Promoting Safety

April 21, 2026

Each year on April 28, Canadians observe the National Day of Mourning, a time to remember workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or become ill because of their work. Workplace incidents affect more than just the individuals involved—they impact families, colleagues, employers, and communities across New Brunswick.

Tragically, 10 lives were lost in New Brunswick in 2025 due to workplace incidents. Each loss is a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to create safer workplaces. Our goal is simple: to make New Brunswick the safest place to work.

“On the Day of Mourning we remember the workers who lost their lives, were injured, or became ill because of their work. Each name represents a life, a family, and a community forever changed. Their memory reminds us why our commitment to prevention, safety, and care for workers must never waver,” said Tim Petersen, WorkSafeNB’s president and CEO.

WorkSafeNB encourages everyone to take part on April 28 by observing a moment of silence and, where possible, lowering flags to half-mast. This is a time to reflect, remember those we have lost, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of the day.
