News Release Take action on radon at home and at work

October 30, 2026

November is Radon Action Month, a reminder to consider the air we breathe where we live and work.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate inside buildings. You can’t see or smell it, and long-term exposure to high levels increases the risk of lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know whether levels are high.

Start at home with a free test

The Government of New Brunswick is offering free home radon test kits through public libraries across the province. Pick up a kit, follow the instructions and leave the testing device in place for at least 91 days. Return your completed test to the library for analysis.

Kits are available until Feb. 28, 2027. The colder months are an ideal time to test.

Make workplace testing part of your prevention plan

Employers and building owners can also arrange long-term testing to identify elevated radon levels and take steps to reduce exposure.
