Musculoskeletal injuries

Musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) account for almost 36% of the lost-time claims submitted to WorkSafeNB, with back and shoulder injuries representing 70% of these.

The majority of MSIs are caused by overexertion, specifically lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. To help reduce MSIs, WorkSafeNB has developed publications aimed at educating employers and workers on proper steps to prevent MSIs.

WorkSafeNB staff are available to help New Brunswick workplaces identify high-risk tasks and evaluate root causes. They can help find solutions by advising on safe manual handling procedures, appropriate training and equipment. By eliminating or significantly reducing MSIs, employers can improve not only employee health and morale, but also their bottom line.
